River Ambassador Program

We are launching a pilot River Ambassador Program during summer 2026!

We are excited to bring this collaborative pilot program to the Yellowstone River in Park County during July and August 2026.

What is the Ambassador Program?

During the summer, Yellowstone River Ambassadors will engage with the community at busy river access sites, events, and conservation projects along the Upper Yellowstone River. Ambassadors will guide recreational users toward sustainable practices, minimizing their footprint and conflicts. They will provide maps and information on local floats, teach how to prevent negative impacts from heavy use, and connect users with stewardship and advocacy opportunities.

Why the Ambassador Program?

In recent years, the Yellowstone River in Park County has experienced dramatic increases in recreational pressure. With this increase in recreation, we want to ensure that stewardship efforts ramp up in tandem. Thus, the River Ambassador Program will provide hands-on educational opportunities, physical handouts, and tools such as reusable cleanup bags to recreators at Fishing Access Sites during peak recreation days and times. The goal is to provide recreators with the knowledge and tools they need to steward and protect the Yellowstone River for generations to come.

What Do Ambassadors Do?

During July and August, River Ambassadors will:
  • Share practical information for responsible river recreation
  • Engage users in conservation and stewardship
  • Contribute to collaborative river management
  • Educate users on best practices, including river etiquette, proper food storage, and launch/takeout assistance
  • Promote conservation licenses and enhance FAS traffic flow and safety, improving the overall user experience

Ambassadors will table at busy Fishing Access Sites, hand out educational materials and resources, offer electronic pumps to expedite floaters getting on the river, and collect critical data for understanding trends in recreation throughout the summer.
