In the spring of 2024, Montana Freshwater Partners led a project aimed at restoring riparian vegetation along the Yellowstone River to a private property in Emigrant, MT that that experienced significant bank erosion and damage during the 2022 flood. MFP coordinated and worked with volunteers to collect willow cuttings and install them in deep trenches along the riverbank. This technique, known as willow livestaking, encourages the growth of robust root systems that help hold soil in place, significantly reducing future erosion.

As the willows mature, their root networks will anchor the banks more effectively, making them more resistant to high flows and flooding events. In addition to improving bank stability, the restored vegetation will enhance the riparian corridor by providing important habitat and cover for a wide range of wildlife species, including songbirds, amphibians, and small mammals. These projects not only support long-term river health and biodiversity but also help protect private property and infrastructure from future flood impacts.
