Riverfront property is great until a house falls into the water. Preventing such catastrophes is among the goals of a recent study aimed at predicting how the banks of the Yellowstone River are likely to change over the next 100 years.
The 2024 Yellowstone River Channel Migration Zone (CMZ) project has identified places in the city and elsewhere in Park County where riverbank areas are likely to be severely eroded during floods. Such areas identified in the study include the area of Livingston HealthCare, 9th Street Island, and the left riverbank from just below Interstate 90 to Mayor’s Landing, among other places.
The project report also includes a list of potential measures that could help address problem areas. The list of remedies, found on page 85 of the report at https://tinyurl.com/6uv4ump2, could be used in future city or Park County grant applications.
Jeannette Blank, program director with Montana Freshwater Partners, presented the findings to the Livingston City Commission on Feb. 4.
