The Livingston City Commission scrapped plans to incorporate an agricultural (ag) zoning type in the city’s new zoning code.
City staff had included ag zoning in the draft zoning code that called for 30-acre minimum lot sizes and rules regarding allowable uses — even detailing numbers of animals allowed.
But some commissioners, during their Dec. 2 meeting, brought up the fact that focusing on agricultural uses and related manufacturing/production for the district seemed not to line up with the desires expressed by some members of the public and nonprofits, some of whom pushed for ag zoning as a way to protect environmentally sensitive areas and prevent problems related to flooding, erosion, and river channel migration. The intent as expressed by the public appeared to be preserving open space, not facilitating agricultural operations, some commissioners concluded.
